Coach’s Weekly Report

2nd May 2013, Newton-le-Willows A 2 v Seneley & Garswood 2

Seneley & Garswood travelled to their local neighbours Newton in their final game of the season looking for a display that would potentially lift them away from the lower standings in the table. The weather was warm and sunny, and the talk on the side line from many parents was of barbecues being dusted down and used finally over the forthcoming bank holiday weekend. The visitors started brightly and were rewarded after just two minutes with a fantastic goal, as some neat interplay down the left flank between Liam Hilton and James Haswell saw the ball drop to Mattias Lokuta who hit a rasping shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Newton were starting to look dangerous with ball’s played over the top of Garswood’s defence and the visitors keeper Dan Finney had to act as a makeshift sweeper, clearing his lines on several occasions. Five minutes before half-time, Garswood extended their lead as a corner was cleared to James Haswell who jinked inside and fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from twelve yards out.

Garswood introduced all four substitutes at half-time as the temperature and firm ground was taking its toll and tried to get the ball on the deck but they were gradually being pushed back as Newton looked for a way back into the game. Newton were rewarded with twenty minutes left as a corner was only half cleared, and was prodded home gratefully by the visitors centre forward. The visitors defence was then under pressure as a series of set pieces fizzed around the box, and it was no surprise when the ball was lashed home with ten minutes left making the game all square.

Garswood made their last couple of changes in an attempt to snatch a winner, but in truth Newton looked the more likely, if any, to produce the winning goal as the visitors had clearly become weary and their passing game was becoming more disjointed as time wore on. The final whistle was then blown on an entertaining match between two teams with contrasting styles of play but the result was a fair one.

Team: D Finney, L Dixon, J Aspey, C Guerin, O Roberts, M Lokuta (captain), J Haswell, B Berry, C Ashurst, L Hilton, C Davies, Subs: B Wilson, O Kennedy, R Eden, J A Williams.

Man of the Match: Mattias Lokuta – Captains performance as Mattias lead by example, driving his team forward and scoring one of the goals of the season; never took a backward step against much bigger opposition and has the heart of a lion.

11nd April 2013, Seneley & Garswood Juniors Division 1 U13 0 v Highfield Grange A 4

Seneley & Garswood welcomed near neighbours Highfield Grange A to Birch Grove for their final home game of the season. The banter had been flowing between both sets of lads in the week before at UpHolland High School a number of lads from both teams played in the same school team.

The home side started brightly playing some neat football, but again were undone 10 minutes in as a mix up in the box gave the Highfield Grange centre forward a tap in form 5 yards. Five minutes later a ball into the box was allowed to bounce twice and was tapped in to make the score 0-2 to the away side. An almost identical ball from a throw in just before half time produced the same result for the away side as hesitant defending gifted the visitors a 0-3 half time lead.

Garswood continued to get the ball down and play and peppered the away keeper with shots from all angles but he produced some fine saves, and it seemed that it would not be Garswood’s night. This was confirmed when Highfield Grange made it 0-4 with five minutes left after a shot from 18 yards gave the home keeper no chance. Although a disappointing result for the home side, this was an entertaining match and a good performance from Highfield Grange who have a great set of lads who play football the right way and always show respect to their opponents.

Team: D Finney, L Dixon, B Wilson, C Guerin, J Aspey, M Lokuta (captain), J Haswell, R Eden, O Kennedy, L Hilton, C Davies, Subs: B Berry, O Roberts

Man of the Match: J Aspey – Sharp in the tackle and 100% commitment, improving massively at right back and a pleasure to coach.

Special mention – O Kennedy – Played in an unaccustomed deep midfield role and made some fine challenges even though he was carrying a couple of knocks.

7nd April 2013, Seneley & Garswood Juniors Division 1 U13 4 v Orford A 4

Seneley & Garswood hosted top of the league Orford A team at Birch Grove looking to exact some sort of revenge for their 4-0 loss a few weeks earlier. The teams had played out some memorable games over the last few years, and this match was not to disappoint from an entertainment point of view.

Garswood had a point to prove as recent performances could be improved upon, and despite dominating the first ten minutes they fell behind to a swift counter attack by the away team. This seemed to galvanise the hosts and Liam Hilton finished with aplomb soon after to level the scores before Mattias Lokuta dispatched a penalty which almost took a lick of paint off the crossbar before crossing the line.

Garswood continued to play at a high tempo and increased their lead 5 minutes into the second half as James Haswell hit a trademark free-kick which gave the opposition keeper no chance. Ten minutes later the set piece specialist was at it again as a rocket of a free-kick was destined for the top corner before an Orford defender headed the ball into his own net. Garswood tried to close the game down but Orford responded immediately and the home side were starting to tire at this point with a couple of lads carrying knocks, and no subs on the side line to step in. Orford threw caution to the wind and scored twice in the last five minutes to level the scores at 4-4, a fantastic game of football for the neutral, but disappointing for the home team that they could not hold out.

Team: D Finney, L Dixon, B Wilson, C Guerin, J Aspey, M Lokuta (captain), J Haswell, R Eden, C Ashurst, L Hilton, C Davies, Subs: O Kennedy

Man of the Match: J Haswell – Always a menace on the ball and on set pieces, with skill and pace to burn.

Special mention – C Ashurst – Played in a deep midfield role just ahead of the back four and looked like he had played there for years.

Scorers – L Hilton, M Lokuta, J Haswell, Own Goal

2nd April 2013, Seneley & Garswood Juniors Division 1 U13 3 v Whittle Hall A 7

Seneley & Garswood welcomed Whittle Hall A team to Birch Grove for their first midweek fixture of the season. The two sides had played out an entertaining 3-4 match earlier in the season which Garswood managed to edge so it looked like the watching crowd would be entertained with a feast of goals.

The away side did not disappoint in this respect as they raced into a 0-3 lead before Garswood had caught their breath. The opponent’s centre forward was wreaking havoc with his pace and the home defence struggled to contain him early doors. Just before half-time Garswood pulled one back after a free kick from James Haswell was touched onto the bar providing Ollie Kennedy the chance to tap home from the edge of the six yard box.

Garswood made a couple of changes at half time and attempted to set the tempo, but the visitors always looked dangerous up top and increased their lead with two quick fire goals to make the score 5-1. Ben Berry then scored one of the goals of the season as he bustled through midfield with a commanding run and unleashed a ferocious drive from 25 yards which gave the keeper no chance. More goals followed by the away side, before Liam Hilton got his deserved reward for his non-stop commitment as he jinked past three defenders in the box before bravely slotting past the keeper as he charged from his line.

Team: D Finney, L Dixon, B Wilson, C Guerin, J Aspey, M Lokuta (captain), J Haswell, R Eden, O Kennedy, L Hilton, C Davies, Subs: B Berry, O Roberts.

Man of the Match: M Lokuta – Overun in midfield at times against bigger opposition but never shirked a challenge and led by example throughout the match.

Scorers – O Kennedy, B Berry, L Hilton.

10th March 2013

Seneley & Garswood Juniors Division 1 U13 0 v East Leigh A 0

Seneley & Garswood welcomed East Leigh A to a sunny but ridiculously cold Birch Grove for their noon showdown. Another tough battle lay ahead for the home side as East Leigh had beaten Garswood 1-0 earlier in the season in a match with very few chances. The weather, although bright, was more accustomed to Siberia with a biting wind sweeping directly across the pitch throughout the match.

The home side made a strong start and could have found themselves 1-0 up inside the first two minutes. James Haswell hit a dipping free-kick from 20 yards out but the East Leigh keeper somehow tipped the ball onto the bar and the rebound was cleared to safety by a grateful opposition defender. Garswood continued to look the more likely to break the deadlock in the first half but you always had the feeling that one goal would be enough for either side to take the points as both defences looked organised.

Garswood made two changes in the second half in an attempt to inject a little more energy and continued to play some good football, but East Leigh’s confidence was starting to grow and they were looking dangerous on the counter attack. On one such forward raid, Garswood’s keeper Dan Finney had to be on his toes as he came to the edge of the box to thwart the opposition striker who looked certain to score when put through one on one. Both sides had half chances to win the game but the draw was a fair result in the end, despite the lack of goals, the effort from both sets of lads could not be faulted.

Team: D Finney, L Dixon, B Wilson, C Guerin, O Roberts, M Lokuta (captain), J Haswell, R Eden, O Kennedy, L Hilton, C Davies, Subs: J Aspey, C Ashurst.

Man of the Match: Liam Dixon – made the game look easy as he did the simple things with great endeavour. Playing in more than one position, he looked assured throughout and has been Mr Reliable in the last few games.

.3rd March 2013

Orford B 4 v Seneley & Garswood Juniors Division 1 U13 0

Seneley & Garswood travelled to top of the league Orford knowing that they would be in for a tough match. The two teams had dominated the league standings in the previous two seasons as they both filled the top two spots. Garswood had won the league in 2012 with Orford second, with the placing’s reversed the season before in 2011.

Both teams started in combative fashion with Garswood looking to play through their midfield and Orford looking for the long ball in to their front two. This tactic worked for Orford ten minutes before half time as their centre forward raced onto a long ball to prod past Dan Finney, giving the keeper no chance with a well-placed finish. The half ended in controversial fashion as Orford’s right midfielder was involved in a running battle with one of Garswood’s midfielders. The referee decided to sin bin the opposition midfielder for aggressive behaviour instead of producing a card, a decision which would prove crucial in the final outcome of the match.

Garswood introduced their three subs at the interval in an attempt to raise the tempo, but Orford made it 2-0 five minutes into the second half with a superbly taken free kick from 25 yards out which was despatched by Orford’s right midfielder. Garswood had to chase the game at this point and poured forward at every opportunity but were undone by hesitancy at the back and another well taken free kick to find themselves 4-0 down with ten minutes left. Despite the result, the lads kept going until the end and Orford’s joy at beating their rivals was abundantly clear at the final whistle. Another disappointing result for Garswood, but again there will be plenty to work on at training. To be honest, we played some really good football at times but lacked the aggression that Orford showed in certain areas of the pitch.

Team: D Finney, L Dixon, B Wilson, C Guerin, J Aspey, M Lokuta (captain), J Haswell, R Eden, C Ashurst, J A Williams, C Davies, Subs: O Roberts, L Hilton, O Kennedy.

Man of the Match: Connor Guerin – never shirked a challenge all day in a really physical game, strong and commanding at centre half.

24th Feb 2013

Seneley & Garswood Juniors Division 1 U13 1 v Haydock A 3

Seneley & Garswood welcomed their local neighbours Haydock to a chilly Birch Grove looking to claim the three points that could take them within touching distance of the top of Division 1. The hosts knew that they would have to be at their best as the two sides had played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, and Haydock remained unbeaten in the league so far. Both sides looked to attack from the off, and it was Haydock who took the lead mid-way through the first half after a dangerous ball was allowed to bounce twice inside the box before being swept home by the opposition centre forward.

Garswood quickly responded through James Haswell as he hit a stunning free-kick from 25 yards giving the Haydock keeper no chance. James immediately thanked his dad Paul for the practice that had taken place earlier in the week. Just before half-time, Haydock scored again as some hesitant defending gifted them a chance that they could not miss from three yards out.

Garswood made three changes in the second half in an attempt to wrestle control of the game, but Haydock always looked dangerous with the pace that they had up front, and extended their lead with 20 minutes left with a well taken header from the Haydock substitute. Garswood could not find any passing rhythm and Haydock could have extended their lead but for some smart saves from the home keeper. 3 – 1 was probably a fair result and good luck to Haydock for the rest of the season. If they play as well as they did today, they will surely be in the shake up for honours come April. Garswood were left to lick their wounds, but will learn from today’s disappointment and will put the hard work in on the training pitch ahead of next week’s away fixture at top of the table Orford.

Team: D Finney, L Dixon, B Wilson, C Guerin, O Roberts, M Lokuta (captain), J Haswell, R Eden, O Kennedy, L Hilton, C Davies, Subs: J Aspey, J A Williams, C Ashurst.

Scorer: J Haswell

Man of the Match: Dan Finney – great agility from the home keeper, making several good saves to thwart Haydock’s attack.

Oldham School leaders come together to discuss Innovative coaching plans in Education

15 March 2012

Judith Barton, Director of British School of Coaching: ‘Schools in North Manchester are trailblazers in their innovative use of coaching. We look forward to building on this success and welcoming colleagues from across the city.’

Ray Garner, Director of Programmes, British School of Coaching: ‘I can see the solution focussed aspect of the coaching scheme being a very effective addition to the education in the UK’

Oldham – March 15, 2012:

Local Head teachers and school leaders met in Oldham on Thursday to discuss a new groundbreaking scheme aimed at changing thinking about teaching and development in schools. The afternoon saw the launch of a new network between school leaders in the area, an attempt to create a forum for sharing ideas and resources across Greater Manchester schools.

The event was sponsored by British School of Coaching (BSC) who introduced their cutting-edge coaching and supervision techniques to 36 senior leaders from schools all over Oldham. The organisation, a rapidly growing company based in St Helens, offered demonstration coaching sessions to local schools, anticipating a sea change in thinking about education- locally and beyond.

The coaching and supervision initiative comes following an overwhelmingly positive response to pilot coaching courses run by BSC in schools. The scheme aims to help embed coaching as the underpinning communications and management style in schools- providing teachers with highly practical skills to increase the quality of learning and in-school relationships.

The event was attended by 36 heads of staff from schools all over the Oldham area and was chaired by Mike Jones, Head Teacher of South Failsworth Primary School.
