The ILM Level 3 Coaching Qualification is a practical programme for individuals who want to develop effective coaching skills and a coaching style of leadership.
It is ideal for aspiring or junior managers, team leaders, HR professionals, teachers, trainers and those beginning their coaching journey.
The programme combines coaching theory, practical skills development, reflective learning and real coaching practice. Learners develop the confidence and skills needed to use coaching effectively within workplace and professional settings.
The qualification provides a strong foundation for anyone who wants to use coaching within their role, support the development of others or progress to higher-level coaching and mentoring qualifications.
Who is the programme for?
The programme is suitable for professionals who want to:

You do not need previous coaching qualifications to apply. However, you will need access to suitable individuals for your coaching practice.
Course Overview
The ILM Level 3 Coaching Qualification develops the practical skills and knowledge needed to coach effectively within a workplace setting.
You will explore coaching models, active listening, effective questioning, goal setting, feedback and ethical coaching practice.
The programme also places a strong emphasis on practical learning. You will apply your skills through coaching practice while receiving support from your Personal Tutor.

How the Course Works
The programme begins with four interactive workshop days that combine coaching theory with practical application.
During the workshops, you will develop your understanding of workplace coaching and practise key coaching skills. You will also prepare for your assessed work.
You will complete three assessed assignments and six hours of coaching practice.
Your Personal Tutor will support you throughout the programme. You will also receive supervision and guidance to help you reflect on your coaching practice and continue developing your skills.
Programme Duration
The programme normally takes approximately six to nine months to complete. The exact timeframe will depend on your work commitments and the pace of your coaching practice.
We run several cohorts throughout the year, with online and selected hybrid workshop dates available.
Course Tutors

Our tutors are experienced practising coaches, mentors and trainers. They bring professional experience and practical coaching expertise into the learning environment.
Throughout the qualification, tutors provide guidance, encouragement and constructive support.
What You Will Need
To complete the programme, you will need:
- An interest in developing people through coaching
- Access to suitable coachees for your coaching practice
- Microsoft Word or equivalent software
- An email account and reliable internet access

When You Have Finished
On successful completion, you will achieve an internationally recognised ILM Level 3 Coaching Qualification.
You will also have developed practical coaching skills that you can use within your current role, as a workplace coach or as a foundation for further professional development.
Learners can continue their development through BSC coaching supervision, CPD events, networking and other professional development opportunities.
Progression and Professional Development
Many learners choose to continue their development through the ILM Level 5 Certificate or Diploma in Effective Coaching and Mentoring.
The Level 5 qualification builds on the knowledge and practical skills developed at Level 3. It is suitable for those who want to deepen their coaching practice and work more extensively as an organisational or professional coach.
Learners may later choose to progress to our ILM Level 7 Executive and Senior Level Coaching and Mentoring programmes or CPD programmmes like Wellbeing Coaching.
